Bluffing at Poker
The most frequently associated term with poker is without a doubt the "BLUFFING". Thanks to many movies as well as the World Series of Poker being on TV, most people believe that a game of poker is being won by a bluff.
It is an essential ingredient of the poker game, yet many players do it hardly at all, some never and others do it at the wrong time. Failing to have at least a basic grasp of the art of bluff is like playing tennis without being able to produce a forehand drive – it’s that a big gap in one’s armory. It is safe to say that the ability to bluff successfully is what separates the better players from the regular ones.
Quite simply bluffing is making an enormous bet with a bad hand so the other player or players throw their cards away. Doing that a few times will make more money than winning a pot with good cards. So how do the experts do it? Well one thing they have is an uncanny knack of detecting weakness. Another is timing. And another is the "guts" – the bottle to bet a month’s salary with absolutely nothing and not give any outward signs of nervousness. Not all types of poker players lend themselves to bluff as much as no limit texas holdem. In this form of the game players can bet as much as they like, whenever they like. Even the high rollers regard it as a bit too dangerous to play for cash so it is mainly played in poker tournaments in which participants liabilities are limited to the buy-in (entry fee). The reason no limit texas holdem is the tournament pros favored game is that they don’t need good cards to accumulate chips. They can just pick on the weaker players at the table and bully them. What makes this possible is the fact that most of the time at Texas hold’em the “flop"? – The first three common cards dealt – fails to improve the hands of anyone contesting the pot. No one has anything so the first player to make a sizeable bet forces the opposition out and picks up the chips. A weak player will “check"? – not make a bet – in an attempt to get a free card, which might improve his hand. But the aggressive player will not allow this to happen, detect the weakness and bet enough to see his opponent off.
Deciding which hand is the right to play requires good judgment and good understanding of all the bluffing concepts. Only after gaining a good grasp on each of these poker bluffing concepts you will be able to see profit from your poker bluffing on the long run.
